  • The Aid and Attendance Program

  • Homemaker Home Health Aide Care

Learn more about these programs and eligibility requirements below.

Aid and Attendance

Aid and Attendance, commonly referred to as “A&A”, is a benefit that is paid monthly to eligible Veterans and their surviving spouses who require assistance with daily activities like eating, dressing, bathing, medication distribution, etc.

If you are currently receiving a VA pension, you might be eligible for A&A benefits if you meet at least one of the criteria listed below.

  • You require another person to help you with daily activities like eating, bathing, toileting, etc.

  • You have an injury or illness that keeps you in bed a large portion of the day.

  • You are a patient in a nursing facility due to the loss of physical or mental abilities related to a disability.

  • You have several limited eyesight.

  • You are housebound due to a permanent disability.

In order to be considered, you will need to fill out VA Form 21-2680 and mail it to the pension management center in your state. You can also apply in person at a VA regional office.

Homemaker & Home Health Aide Care

The Homemaker or Home Health Aide program is designed for a trained professional to come directly to a Veteran’s home in order to provide care for those who are in need of assistance with daily activities like eating, bathing, dressing, etc. Homemaker Home Health Aides are often used as an alternative to nursing home care.

While homemakers and Home Health Aides are not nurses themselves, they are supervised by a registered nurse who oversees the care and helps to assess the Veteran’s care needs.

Homemaker Home Health Aide services are included with the VHA Standard Medical Benefits Package, so all enrolled Veterans are eligible if they meet the clinical guidelines for service. It should be noted however that a copay may be charged based on your VA disability status.
